The medina of Kairouan is a walled old town listed by UNESCO since 1988. It is compact and easy to explore on foot, with whitewashed lanes, blue doors, mosques, zawiyas and busy souks around the Great Mosque.
A simple route
- Enter through one of the old gates, such as Bab ech-Chouhada or Bab Tunis.
- Wander the souks for carpets, copperware, leather and sweets.
- Stop for makroudh and mint tea. See our makroudh guide.
- Finish at the Great Mosque of Kairouan.
Etiquette and practical tips
- Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) in the medina and especially near mosques.
- Many shops pause around the midday and Friday prayers; plan around them.
- Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing worshippers.
- Carry small change and water, and visit in the morning or late afternoon in summer.
- Look for halal restaurants; alcohol is not served in most traditional eateries here.
