Kairouan sits inland in central Tunisia, roughly 150 km south of Tunis and about an hour from the coast at Sousse. There is no airport in the city, so most visitors arrive by road.

From Tunis

  • By car: about 2 to 2.5 hours via the A1 motorway and local roads. Renting a car gives the most freedom for day trips.
  • By louage (shared taxi): louages leave when full from the long-distance station in Tunis. They are fast, cheap and the most common choice for locals.
  • By bus: regional coaches run from Tunis to Kairouan several times a day. Check the current timetable on arrival.

From Sousse, Monastir or Enfidha

Sousse is the easiest base for reaching Kairouan: louages and buses leave regularly and the trip takes around an hour. Monastir and Enfidha airports are both within reach by taxi or a pre-booked transfer.

Getting around the city

The medina is best explored on foot. Taxis are inexpensive for reaching the Aghlabid Basins and sights outside the walls. Agree on the fare or ask for the meter before you set off.

Practical tips

  • Travel in the morning to have a full day in the city.
  • Carry small change for louages and taxis.
  • Friday is a day of prayer: some shops close around midday, so plan mosque visits accordingly.
